The Shiki Monthly Kukai

July 2010 Kukai

Dear Friends,

Here are the results for the July 2010 Kukai, wherein our Kigo subject was Any Summer Grass and our Free Format subject was Anything Quirky.

Congratulations to Parkeenka Ntato and Polona Oblak, winners of our Kigo section and to Cara Holman, winner of our Free Format section!

The haiku are listed in order of total points received from voters. The numbers reflect the number of voters who gave the haiku either three points, two points, or one point -- followed by the total points for all votes.

Those who were given less than three points and who requested anonymity in such a case are so noted.

In the listing below, after each poem the author is listed, and then a three digit code revealing how many 3-point, 2-point, and 1-point points were cast for this poem by the other participating poets.

(2,1,4 = 12) would indicate that the poem above received two 3-point votes, one 2-point vote, and four 1-point votes.

Voters comments are in italics below the respective poems.

Seventh Place  — 12 Points
the wind
through the buffalo grass
Little Big Horn

martin gottlieb cohen
(1,3,3) = 12 pts

Historiku is a form that rarely works for me, but this one nails it. Echoes of Basho, sure, but with a distinctly American accent.

A wonderful example of 'show' over 'tell' and the power of implication. We know the lawn has escaped control by the height of the squirrel's leaps.

Strongly pictorial, while still leaving the reader something to do.

fresh mown hay —
pulling on the nostrils
the smell of the childhood

Petru-Ioan Garda
(0,0,3) = 3 pts

I find this haiku brimming with nostalgia; though I feel it would benefit from having the articles (the) removed, in particular from the last line. Still, it evokes for me that one-and-only scent of new mown hay - reading it, I found myself transported - a childhood vision of myself, standing in a field and sniffing. Beautiful.

I like this one for its imagery and potential grace, though it's flawed. Blue grass is a cool season grass rather than summer. It's worth revising for submission elsewhere. I'd suggest something like: cold morning--/mosquito eggs swaying/on a dewy blade.
